The conversation centered on themes such as identity, language, and societal development, always drawing from her personal background and professional experience. For instance, the discussion covered Papiamento in detail as a language of expression, culture, and connectedness, as well as the role language plays in how people position themselves and their islands. Migration in the Caribbean was also addressed: the movements of people between islands, Latin America, and Europe, and the social, political, and human consequences thereof. Drawing on her work as an anthropologist, Simon reflected on issues surrounding colonial legacies, representation, inequality, and the ways in which Caribbean communities continue to shape themselves in a changing world. The focus was on how she is working step-by-step, through community, crowdfunding, and strategic partnerships, on a rehearsal house and a new concert hall, intended to make creators from Southeast visible and to restore a permanent cultural infrastructure. In addition, the conversation touched upon Caribbean identity, tradition, and the sense of belonging (or lack thereof), as well as her personal journey as an artist and teacher. For Graziëlla, building a future-proof cultural community is the common thread in her mission.
